Cropmarks (Meldon)
NZ 12048578. Crop marks of a sub-circular enclosure about 100m in diameter on the summit of Whittle Hill. (1)(2)
Noted. (3)
On Whittle Hill were three entrenchments of earth and stone, each about 200 yards long, lying in lines parallel to each other east to west, flanked across one end by a fourth rampart running north to south. The stones were removed about 1800. Many of them bore marks of fire and several querns were found among them. (4)
Whittle Hill is a prominent feature with steepish sides rising to about 350 OD. It is fully ploughed and shows no trace of either the enclosure or the enigmatic 'entrenchments' which could be some form of field enclosure or perhaps linear quarrying.
The enclosure is too small for a hillfort and presumably represents an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement. (5)
Listed under pre-Roman Iron Age multivallate (forts, settlements and enclosures). Later photographs show additional complications, possibly indications of an overlying settlement of the Roman period. (6)(7)
Extensive cultivation has obliterated all trace of these works. (8)
Scheduled. (9)
NZ 120 858. Whittle Hill. Listed in a gazetteer of British hillforts as a multivallate structure enclosing 0.40ha. (10a)
NZ 120 857. Iron Age enclosure on Whittle Hill. Scheduled No ND/609. (10b)
