Coldcoats (Ponteland)
NZ 144748. Deserted medieval village at Coldcoats. (1)
Possible indications at NZ 145748, to the east of Middle Coldcoats. (2)
The ground at the indicated area is uneven, but no surveyable deserted medieval village remains are apparent. (3)
The manor of Coldcoats was granted by the lord of Mitford to Hugh de Eure c.1268. The vill was not listed in the 1296 Subsidy, but North Coldcoats provided two taxpayers in 1312.
The township seems always to have comprised two or three small settlements thereafter. East, West and North Coldcoats were recorded in 1666-7 call roll for Mitford court baron. In 1841 the steadings were East, Middle and West Farms.
It is possible that before the later 13th century the township had contained a single village settlement, but none survived by the time of the earliest documentary references.
From aerial photographs possible indications of a deserted village have been recorded on the east side of Middle Coldcoats Farm. Most of the surface irregularities are the result of surface quarrying. There are some enclosure banks visible as earthworks. (4)
Medieval settlement visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1992. The remains lie to the east of Middle Coldcotes and consist of small embanked rectilinear enclosures. There are also some enclosures to the south of Coldcoats Burn. Medieval ridge and furrow survives as earthworks surrounding the deserted settlement. (5)
General association with HER 31282. (6)
