Kirkley medieval village (Ponteland)
NZ 150772 deserted medieval village at Kirkley. (1)
No depopulation remains are visible on aerial photographs (RAF 1949) or on the ground. Any village would probably have been destroyed by the emparking of Kirkley Hall. (2)
The manor was granted to Hugh de Eure in 1267 and remained in the family for the next three and half centuries. Thirteen people assessed in 1312 Lay Subsidy. A smaller number of contributions in the 1336 Subsidy.
The Hearth Tax of 1666 recorded 16 houses- unknown whether they formed a village, or were scattered through the township. The village had been depopulated and emparked a century later. Armstrong's map of 1769 showed the hall in extensive grounds.
Much of the emparked land is in ridge and furrow indicating where the village is not located. There is a ridge-free area just south of the hall, and most clearly to the east of the drive - may represent part of the village site or position of the medieval manor. (3)
