Chapel (Whalton)
Licence to hold services in the chapel of the Blessed Virgin, near Ogle Castle (area NZ 140790) was granted in 1376. (1)
The traditional site of the chapel is at NZ 14027901 (a) where there is a rectangular platform 28m x 15m defined by a low bank, but no traces of foundations. (2)
Platform surveyed at 1/2500. The orientation is north-south, however, which suggests a simple building steading (part of Ogle deserted medieval village) rather than a Chapel site. (3)
In a field at permanent pasture are the turf-covered footings of a rectangular structure or structures, allegedly the site of a chapel (see OS495; auth 2). It survives as two platforms separated by a low
scarp, 0.1m high, the higher to the S; the whole is bounded by a bank up to 0.8m high in which the occasional stone facing is exposed. It measures 28m N-S by 13m transversely. This feature does not resemble a chapel, and appears too substantial to be a part of the deserted Medieval village (NZ 17 NW 4); it is more likely to be the foundations of a building or possibly a walled garden associated with
the nearby Ogle Castle (NZ 17 NW 2). Surveyed on MSD. (4a)
