Heddon West (West Heddon) (Heddon-on-the-Wall)

NZ 125688 Heddon West, listed as a deserted medieval village. (1)

There are no surface indications of depopulation, apart from extensive rig and furrow ploughing surrounding the present farmstead of West Heddon (NZ 12336870). Examination of available aerial photographs (RAF 1946) negative. (2)

West and East Heddon (NZ 16 NW 19) were assessed together for the 1296 Subsidy, when they provided six taxpayers. No other evidence for the size of the medieval settlement. A farm stands on the site of the village, crofts are visible north of the farmhouse, and the perimeter bank which divides them from ridge and furrow to the north. (3)
