Round cairn at Heddon Laws Farm (Heddon Law) (Heddon-on-the-Wall)

NZ 1406 6935 Tumulus (O.E.). (1)

Horsley refers to a 'very great heap of stones remaining' at Heddon Law, a large tree-covered mound, accepted by later writers as a tumulus. An amateur, exploratory excavation, conducted in 1925, revealed 1ft 6ins below the surface, a small section of curved walling 2ft 8ins high, and 4ft wide composed of boulders, which was thought to imply a simple enclosure around the top of the mound. A few flint fragments were found. The centre was not approached, and no conclusions were drawn from the excavation. It is also mentioned as a beacon-stead in 1549, and the site of encampments in 1341 and 1643-4. (2)(3)(4)

NZ 1406 6935. Heddon Law (L.B.). (5)

The mound, 25m in diameter, 2.6m high, and turf-covered, surmounts a natural hillock. There are no external indications of an 'enclosure'; but mutilation of the eastside by a modern building reveals a high stone. The mound appears to artificial, but is a doubtful barrow. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (6)
