East Heddon (Heddon-on-the-Wall)

NZ 132 686 Heddon East, listed as deserted medieval village. (1)

There are no surface indications of depopulation, apart from extensive ridge and furrow ploughing surrounding the present East Heddon farmstead at NZ 13246853. Examination of available aerial photographs (RAF 1946) negative. (2)

East and West Heddon (NZ 16 NW 35) had joint assessment for the 1296 Lay Subsidy, providing six taxpayers. In the Poll Tax of 1377 18 adults were listed at East Heddon. In 1746 East Heddon was farmed by six tenants, but two steadings lay outside the village. Declined to four holdings by 1756, and in early 19th century three farms remained with a few cottages. Two steadings now stand on the site. There are a few vague traces of earthworks on the south side of East Heddon, with has and furrow beyond them. The farmer records that much stonework has been found in the fields around the steading. (3)

A Medieval enclosure is visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NZ 1321 6841. The ditched and embanked enclosure (69 metres wide) has medieval ridge and furrow associated with it (see NZ16NW 124). The enclosure lies to the south of East Heddon. It may relate to the possible medieval village recorded by authority 1. (4)
