Round cairn north-west of Bellion Farm (Netherwitton)
(NZ 09579058) Tumulus. Five Ashes. (1)
A cairn was opened about 300 yards west of Netherwitton village in November 1828. It is not far from two others !one of which was opened a few years since. The cairn, about 30 paces in diameter, was formed of sandy earth covered with stones. A little to the north of its centre was a cist, oriented east-west, and measuring 4ft 9ins long, 1ft 10ins to 2ft 0ins wide and 1ft 10ins deep. The cover stone was 6ft long, 3ft 6ins wide and 1ft 2-1/2ins thick. The cist contained teeth and a few fragments of bone. (The two authorities disagree as to whether or not the bones were burnt. The cist described would almost certainly be for a crouched burial). (2)
A badly robbed cairn situated upon a low pasture rise. Much of the stone content has been thrown outward so that the original diameter cannot be confirmed. The present diameter is 36m, with a maximum height of 1.5m, any original ditch or retaining circle has now been covered by excavated material. There are no remains of the cist at the site and its present location (and contents) has not been ascertained. (3)
Condition unchanged. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (4)
Standing 4ft high, with 90ft diameter and uneven surface, in 1980. (5)
Scheduled. (6)
NZ 095 906. Five Ashes round barrow and two round barrows to the north. Scheduled No ND/398. (7a)
