Field system (Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst)

Field system of late medieval or early post-medieval date surrounding the hillfort at Lordenshaws. (1)

Scheduled. (2)

Following the abandonment of Newtown Park (NZ 09 NW 14), possibly before 1586, the area surrounding Lordenshaws hillfort (NZ 09 NE 2) was divided into fields. Most of the fields were bounded by earth dykes up to 3.5m wide and 0.6m high. In some places pre-existing boundaries were re-used. Some of the fields contain broad ridge-and-furrow, with ridges up to 13.5m wide. This cultivation probably ceased before the 18th century. (3a)

General association woth HER 10778 (ridge and furrow). (3)
