Hollow ways at Lordenshaws Hillfort (Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst)
Sunken trackways, known as hollow ways, lead towards the two entrances to Lordenshaws Hillfort. The hollow ways are at least three thousand years old, and may pre-date the hillfort. (1)
Two trackways near Lordenshaws hillfort may be prehistoric in origin. Each is the earliest feature in its respective stratigraphic sequence and both are focused on the hillfort entrances. They may have remained in use until the construction of the deer park pale (NZ 09 NW 14) which blocks the westernmost track. This track is up to 8.5m wide and 1.6m deep, while the eastern one is up to 13.5m wide and 1.7m deep. (2a)
