Simonside Cairn (Whitton and Tosson)
NZ 02409871 The western summit of Simonside (1408 feet above sea level) is surmounted by a large cairn. It is 17m in diameter and 2m high and retained on the north side by a natural outcrop. Two small modern cairns have been built from some of its stones.
The cairn appears to be of some age but it purpose is not clear. The labour involved in making such a large cairn suggests that it is not merely a landmark. Discovered during field investigation. (1)
The cairn is one of two situated on the highest point of Simonside (the other is NZ 09 NW 15). Both are substantial curricks, but it is significant that a number of other cairns at lower levels in the vicinity yielded evidence of burials; while the only one comparable in size and situation to the two in question (NZ 09 NW 8) proved negative. Divorced survey at 6 inch scale with enlargement on divorced survey card. (2)
Scheduled. (3)
A large prominent cairn situated on a rocky spur on the western summit of Simonside Hill and set slightly back from the vertical north face of the crag. It has been modified by walkers who have constructed modern marker cairns on the north side. A small oval drystone enclosure, probably a shelter, 4.5m by 5.5m with an entrance through the north end, has also been built into the south side of the cairn. However, the base which consists of an earthfast stone, appears undisturbed. There is no evidence of excavation though this may have been obscured by subsequent disturbance. (4)
NZ 0241 9871. Simonside Cairn 670m WNW of Old Stell Crag. Scheduled RSM No 20893. The cairn stands over 1m high with a diameter of 18m. It is constructed of large boulders; many of these on the surface have been re-arranged by walkers to form a modern marker cairn. (5a)
No change to report of 8 2 71. Surveyed at 1:10000. (5b)
