Burnt Mound (Belsay; Capheaton)
A possible burnt mound was found while fieldwalking at this site. A large area covered with very black, almost sooty soil, and the remains of heat discoloured stones was seen. The layer appeared to be at least 0.5m deep. The sites lies at the junction of two walls, which meet at the eastern edge of the mound. Similar sites elsewhere in Britain date to the later prehistoric period.
