Old brickworks (Capheaton)
An old brickworks is marked on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1921. This was first, but dismissively, noted as "Old" in the later 1890s - as such it is unlikely to have been a working site. The site therefore dates between the 1860s and 1890s. There were many such sites like this in Northumberland. Two Newcastle-type kiln remains on site - though unexpectedly noted in a ruined condition in 1986. The internal chambers of the kilns are unusual in rising to a point, rather than the normal rounded form. It is likely that these kilns would have been used for the local Capheaton Estate needs for bricks. It is unknown where the clay came from for these.
