Standing Stone (Wallington Demesne)

(NZ 04678289) Standing stone. (1)

NZ 04668290. A much-weathered stone 1.4m high. See photograph. (2)

Stone stands in a field of steam rigg or modern drainage. Position over narrow rigg seems unusual and may have been moved relatively recently. (3)

The standing stone sits over ridge and furrow. The stone however, has clearly stood upright for many centuries. It sits just to the west of old quarry workings and it is possible the stone was moved from its original position by quarrymen. (4)

Scheduled. (5)
N10490
Bronze Age (2600BC to 700BC)
Scheduled Ancient Monument
FIELD OBSERVATION, Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Field Investigation 1968; B H Pritchard
