Romano-British Settlement (Alwinton)
NT 90800954 Enclosures? (1)
Remains of a Homestead situated upon steep south-east slopes of moorland pasture at approx 1250 feet above sea-level, overlooking the valley of the Kidlandlee Burn to the south and east.
The Homestead consists of a scooped sub-rectangular enclosure, bounded by banks of earth and stones, partly destroyed, at the south-west end. In the centre of the interior is a large raised hut circle of 8m diameter, with three small hut circles diameters 4m-5m around it. Outside the narrow entrance into the enclosure, at the north-east corner is a group of four hut circles with diameters of 5m-8m. The south-east bank of the enclosure is extended past this group, but they are not elsewhere contained within a bank. It has probably been destroyed by ploughing. (2)
The work is fairly typical of the local type of minor Romano-British settlement. In fair condition. Sketch survey at 1:2500 scale. (3)
Now ploughed through and planted with conifers, the main plan is still discernible, but only four huts can now be identified with certainty (4)
Basically as described but the 3 northern hut circles shown in the illustration and the bank to the east of these are no longer visible.Surveyed at 1:10,000 (5)
