Fenwick (Matfen)
This is the site of the deserted medieval village. It was first recorded in 1296. By the 19th century only one farmstead remained. The 1840 Tithe Map showed three farms, now there are only two. The earthwork remains of several buildings can be seen between present buildings. (1-4)
Medieval boundary banks, platforms, ditches and hollows are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NZ 0548 7298. The features appear to be the remains of the shrunken medieval settlement of Fenwick. To the south of the modern road are a series of conjoined enclosures formed by broad banks, some enclose areas of ridge and furrow. A rectangular platform can be seen at NZ 0578 7280. It measures 29m by 10m and appears to sit within a fragmentary rectilinear enclosure. To the north of the road is a broad bank to the south of which are two shallow rectilinear hollows of uncertain function. Further banks are visible, two of which run parallel to one another between NZ 0551 7306 and NZ 0518 7319. It is unclear whether these represent plough headlands. (5a-b)
General association with HER 34146 (ridge and furrow). (5)
