Standing Stone (Matfen)

A much weathered standing stone, 7ft high, with several cup marks near its base on the east side. Formerly called the Stob Stone. (2)

The Matfen Standing StoneH00744NZ 032 705
The stone is at the roadside oposite a house named after it. It may hav been moved from its original position. On three sides of its base, close to the ground, are many cup marks. Whether they were put there before or after the stone was erected we do not know, The stone is naturally fluted, which makes it impressive. The cup marks are best seen in oblique sunlight. There are 29 cups and three fainter ones on one side, five cups and an arc around a fainter cup, and 23 of various sizes on the third side. (7b)
