Bradford Shrunken Village (Belsay)
'NZ 067796' Deserted medieval village at Bradford. Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1947). (1)
Bradford now consists of two farmsteads. Local tradition of a village is strong, and two small areas of ground disturbance at NZ 06357965 and NZ 06627962 respectively suggest depopulation. Neither forms any intelligible pattern, however, and they probably represent no more than steadings of additional farmbuildings. (2)
The north and south rows of crofts are partly covered by farm buildings and plantations, but some earthworks remain. Aerial photographs suggest the south row formerly contained about ten crofts. The green has been raised into wide ridges for better drainage. (3)
Village remains visible on infra-red imagery. (4)
