Axe hammer (Prudhoe)
A large, ground, hour-glass perforated axe hammer was found at Edgewell near Prudhoe. It had been lying around Edgewell Colliery [NZ 08936230] for many years, and may have been found when drifting into the hillside for coal. Donated to the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle by P C George Trotter of West Wylam (a). (1)

Edgewell Colliery no longer exists, the site being occupied by a small disused building set into the side of the hill. This building apparently marked the entrance to a small drift mine. (3)
