Wellington Hotel (The Duke of Wellington Inn) (Broomhaugh and Riding)

The Duke of Wellington Inn; doubtless the house in which Mr Thomas Errington resided in 1672. T B 1660 with the arms of Errington in a panel over the door. (2)
The house was built in 1660 by Errington, but the initials 'T B' are those of his successor, Thomas Browell. The building is in good repair and at present in use as a hotel. Now known as the Wellington Hotel. (3)
Condition unchanged. Not outstanding. (4)
Wellington Inn. Grade II listed building. Dated 1660; altered late 18th century; and extended to east c.1812. Interior much altered but two 17th century fireplaces on second floor. Built as the Riding House by Thomas Errington, postmaster of Newcastle under the Commonwealth. In 1673, the scene of alleged witches' gatherings. (5)
The original doorway survives and is dated 1660. (6)
