Water mill (Broomhaugh and Riding)
[NZ 01846143] Mill. (1)
The name of the parish or township as early as 1262 was Riding but, on account of the mill, the place has acquired the name Riding Mill.
The Carnabys owned the mill house and water corn mill, and in 1644 they leased the property to John Ord. In 1663 Thos Errington is recorded as the 'owner' and it is assumed he repaired and rebuilt the mill in the form in which it stands today [1953]. The mill was working until 1902, but has latterly fallen into decay. (2)
'There were six tenants in the Riddinge in the year 1524 ... John Burn paid 20s pa for the mill..' 1570 John Sharprowe holding a water corn mill in Rydyng. (a)(3)
The mill house is now occupied by a firm of builders and decorators. The structure is in good condition. The owner's Messrs Strachan and Gazzini can offer no further information. The historical details were confirmed by Mr W Cook, The Peth, Riding Mill. (4)
The mill is unoccupied and in disrepair. (5)
A mill is thought to have stood on this site since the 14th century. It fell out of use at the beginning of the 20th century and was then used as a sawmill until the 1950s. The buildings were converted into a house in 1972. (6)
