Silver cup from the River Tyne (Bywell)

In 1760, a Mr Robinson, whilst angling on the River Tyne at Bywell, took a small silver cup from the water. It was probably washed out of the banks about Corbridge, where other Roman vessels of silver are said to have been turned out by the floods. (1)

The vessel was 4ins high and 2 1/5ins in diameter at its broadest part. (2)

Inscribed 'Desideri Vivas' on its rim. It was the possession of William Fenwick for some time but is now lost. [Included in a list of Roman Vessels in Northumberland]. (3)

Consulted: no additional information. (4)(5)
N10066
