Hadrian's Wall (Horsley; Matfen)
Scheduled. (1)
A survey and evaluation west of Deneside in 2000 confirmed the excellent state of preservation of the northern Wall ditch, which survives over 2.7m deep, and the counterscarp bank. (2)
Trial trenching in 1980 revealed pre-Vallum ploughmarks sealed by the north bank of the Vallum. The north mound of the Vallum was revetted in stone and turf, the ditch had partly silted up, a crossing was inserted and the north mound partly levelled. The Military Way was identified as a 10 feet wide spread of small, medium and large sandstone slabs immediately adjacent to the north side of the north mound. Later, the road had become covered with collapsed material from the mound and a replacement road, also 10 feet wide, was constructed immediately to the north of its predecessor. (3)
In 2011 three foundation pits were monitored by Pre-Construct Archaeology for new signage in the verge of the B6318 at East Wallhouses. These revealed undated sandstone rubble layers which could potentially represent demolition material associated with Hadrian's Wall. However, two pits lay close to a stone property boundary wall and could be associated with this more recent wall. A third pit contained a rubble layer overlying subsoil. This may represent modern made ground associated with modern construction of the B6318 road. (4)
