Whitchester deserted medieval village (Heddon-on-the-Wall)
This is the site of the deserted medieval village of Whitchester. It was first recorded in tax records from 1296, when five taxpayers were mentioned. By the end of the 14th century the settlement was larger in size. However, after this is it began to shrink and by the early 19th century there was only a farmhouse and two cottages here. All that can be seen at this site now are a small farm and some earthworks in the fields to the south and north-east. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
