Hospital of St Michael (Horsley)

A hospital at Welton is first mentioned in 1266 when an assize was held there. In 1291 it is referred to as the Hospital of St Michael. Only the name Spital survives. In the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1296 the hospital was valued at £2 18s 0d. This is the last reference to it. It was probably destroyed by the Scots and never refounded. (1)

Hospital for a master and sisters, for poor and sick visiting the medicinal well there. Founded before 1266, dissolved after 1296. (2-4)

There are no traces of antiquity to be seen in or around the farmstead of Spital. The owner, Mrs Bulmer, has no knowledge of the hospital or of its site. (4)
