North Dunslawholm, rectangular enclosures (Horsley)

[Centred NZ 08886758] Crop mark enclosure visible on aerial photographs. (1)(2)

Listed as an unclassified rectilinear native settlement. (3)

All surface indications of the enclosure have been destroyed by cultivation. (4)

Two partly overlapping enclosures are visible on aerial photographs. The northern enclosure is probably the earliest and is also the larger of the two; it measures about 80m east-west by 90m north-south. The sides are slightly bowed. The smaller, southern enclosure is more square in shape and measures 65m across. (6)

Aerial photographs taken in May 2003 show a cluster of at least three contiguous rectilinear enclosures, possibly of Prehistoric or Roman date. (7a)

All the photography mentioned by previous authorities was seen. Three contiguous rectilinear enclosures of probable Iron Age or Roman date were seen as cropmarks and mapped from air photographs. The largest of the enclosures measures 96 m by 78 m; the adjacent enclosure measures 60 m in length and at least 65 m in width but is incompletely visible. Both enclosures have curved corners. A curved enclosure which is either the eastern side of the second enclosure or lies beneath it, measures 39 m in length. (7b)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7c)
