Milecastle 16 (Harlow Hill) (Stamfordham)
[NZ 0771 6830] MILECASTLE (R) (site of). (1)
Milecastle 16, at Harlow Hill was trenched for without success over thirty years ago. It seems possible that fresh calculation followed by selective trenching might locate its position. (2)
There are no surface indications of the milecastle at, or near, the published site. (3)
Scheduled. Milecastle 16 is situated on the crest of Harlow Hill with wide views in all directions. It survives as a buried feature in the field to the south of the road. The only upstanding feature is the scarp on the east side of the reduced platform. The milecastle was excavated by Hepple and Richmond in the 1950s. (4)
Repositioned to NZ 07796830. (5a)
(NZ 07796830) MILECASTLE 16 (R) (Site of) (5b)
Horsley was shown the place of the milecastle where the foundations still existed (5d). There is a slight platform in the corner of the field at the Ordnance Survey published position (NZ 0779 6830) but it is uncertain whether this is the milecastle as it is not the right shape; it measured approximately 23m north-south. (5c)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (5e)
General associaiton with Turret 16a (HER 10007) and Turret 16b (HER 10008). (5)
