Site Details

Ice house, Raby Castle (Raby Castle)

The ice house, apparently of the mid 18th century date, lies in Bath Wood in Raby Park opposite the High Pond, probably the original source of ice. The entrance is walled up. Behind, a steep drop to the north facing ice house is stone-lined and edged to form a chute with ten small access steps. The entrance is made of sandstone with two steps on each side of the door, let into each arm at the low, crescent-shaped mound. It probably went out of use about the time of the First World War. Beyond the single low door, an unusually short passage led to the pit, 16ft to 18ft deep and c.10ft to 12ft wide at the top. A grid at the bottom gave onto a drain leading to the stream. The well was domed, and the whole structure lined with either stone or brick. (1)
