Stone Row is an interesting example of early to mid-19th century colliery housing. There is a row of single-storey houses curving round to follow the road-line and slope. Each cottage front has only a door and one window lighting a single room, with a living-room situated behind this under the same very wide roof. Originally the front door opened straight into the bedroom and out of this room opened a door into the living-kitchen. These houses were, however, modernised in about 1947 and a passage was made out of part of the bedroom, a small scullery built at the rear and the windows enlarged.

These terraces of colliery workers housing are first seen on the 1890s Ordnance Survey map and are last seen on the 1960s map, after which they were all demolished. Each house had just two rooms but with an offshoot to the rear for kitchen and washhouse, and a coalhouse and ash/water closet at the rear of a small yard.
