Three separate rows of coke ovens within an area in part of mid-19th century industrial sites running east from Hedleyhope Colliery east along the Deerness.

The banks of coke ovens are on specially constructed terraces over a probable earlier water meadow. The coke ovens are connected, specifically, with the Hedleyhill Colliery and arranged with former rail lines between the two rows and the most southerly row and the Deerness - further railway junctions joining these to a general rail line with sites elsewhere in the valley.

The ovens themselves are mainly brick with variable survival from non existent to a fairly good rating though some are in a state of partial collapse, rubble heaps or with modifications made. The ovens are unmodified dome shapes. The railway links were identifiable in 1996 and the use of multiple lines suggested. The double battery of ovens runs from about NZ 16521 40526 to NZ 16751 40541.
