Legs Cross, Bolam
These are the remains of an Anglo-Saxon (AD410 to 1066) stone cross. Only the shaft and the base survive. It probably originally stood close to its current site. The name 'Legs' may come from the Old English word for 'boundary', and the stone could have marked the boundary between Anglo-Saxon estates of Gainford and Staindrop. It is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.
