Newfield was an unplanned collection of workers housing for the colliery. Houses were of various types, mostly in short terraces. Bush St and Bridge St were in the colliery yard. Challies St was only accessible along a disused railway line. The terraces are seen on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map, and these three named terraces had been demolished by the 1970s.
