Possible Roman Camp, Greta Bridge, Rokeby (Greta Bridge)

Aerial view looking south. c.1970
Aerial view looking south. c.1970
This site is a large banked rectangular enclosure which sits on the east bank of the River Greta. Although no excavation or site investigation has taken place the site appears to be a Roman marching camp, perhaps of the 1st century AD. This site is approximately 200 m on each side and shows a well-preserved bank and ditch, especially on its north-east corner. In addition a number of defended entrances may be seen. This site is visible in aerial photographs dating from the late 1960s onwards, and was observed but not reported on during excavations in the early 1970s, during road widening of the A66. (1-3)

Supposed rectangular earthwork near Greta Bridge, actually part of a series of old field banks delineating ridge and furrow. (5)
