Old Wingate Deserted Medieval Village (Wingate)

This is the site of the deserted medieval village and associated open field system of Old Wingate. The earthwork remains of houses, gardens and ridge and furrow can still be seen. It represents a settlement that may pre-date the Norman Conquest.

Parts of the settlement are occupied by extant farms. Earthwork remains of tofts and crofts lie either side of a central village green and in some places stone footings of buildings within the tofts remain visible, with earthworks up to 0.4m high. To the west is a large curvilinear bank separating the village from the ridge and furrow open fields. West of this bank are 3 ridges measuring 8m wide, with the ridges beyond a uniform 4m wide. Little is known about the history of this site. [Scheduled].

The features described above are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs.
