Possible Medieval Fish Ponds in Bishop Auckland Castle Park (Bishop Auckland)

A number of ponds at this site are probably the same as the group of ponds recorded here in 1381. They may have been used as fish ponds, in which fish were bred to supply food.

This site was added to the Local List on 13th November 2023.

A series of medieval or post medieval fish ponds or later ornamental ponds are visible as earthworks on LiDAR. The features appear to have been formed by modification of meanders of the River Wear and takes advantage of the natural slope and are located within Auckland Park (H1399). The ponds are bisected by a couple of dams, that potentially also acted as causeways, allowing access across the area. The ponds are also crossed by a causeway carrying the post medieval drive through the park (H80768). The features are extant on the latest 2007 LiDAR.
