In 1942, Plawsworth Miners' hostel was built to accommodate 'Bevin Boys' conscripted into coal mining during World War II. The site continued in use in this manner until the last of the Bevin boys left in 1948. It then became a Police training centre until the 1960's. After about 1961 it was a welfare centre, and remains so.

The site remained fairly unchanged in layout until the 1980's when a number of the Nissen huts and other structures were demolished. The last Romney hut was recorded in March 2013. Some basic recording of other surviving features was also carried out. (1)

Monitoring during groundwork revealed foundations of some of the former structures on the site (2)
