Illustration of a cup-and-groove-marked boulder, Barningham Moor 1980-1997

A boulder at this site has a number of prehistoric cupmarks carved onto it. These carvings were probably carved in the Early Bronze Age or Late Neolithic. The purpose of these carvings is not clear though they may have had a religious function. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law (1).

A carved sandstone rock, 0.57 metres by 0.5 metres by 0.08 metres. It is situated on Barningham Moor, in the modern sheep-grazing enclosure known as Scale Knoll Allotment. The monument is on the east flank of a small knoll east of Woodclose Gill, 645 metres north east of Black Hill Gate. The carving consists of a cup with a groove running to the edge of the rock. Two further cups identified by NADRAP recorded as part of The Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Project (NADRAP) 2005-2008 (6).
