Maiden's Bower, Durham City (Durham City)

Maiden's Bower round barrow, Durham
Maiden's Bower round barrow, Durham
This small round flat-topped mound stands on a natural sand hill. It was probably a Bronze Age (2300BC to 800BC) burial mound. The earliest records of the site are from 1346, when the relics of St Cuthbert were placed there during the Battle of Neville's Cross. A wooden cross stood there until 1569.
