A rifle range first appears here on the third edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1919-1926 (1) and remains on OS maps through to the sixth epoch versions of the 1960's (2) after which it is no longer marked. The rifle range is on a southwest/northeast axis with the targets on the southwest end and markers at 100 yard intervals across Whitehall Moss. The range was likely used as a training site during the First World War and WW2. The range is still partially visible on modern aerial photographs (3), particularly in the area where the targets would have been positioned, showing up as an area of bare land with an arc of vegetation.
