War Memorial Wall, Hartlepool Street, Thornley (Easington) (Thornley)
Memorial wall featuring dedication plaques at the head of a path leading from the north side of Hartlepool Street. The wall forms the back end of a square compound (46ft long, 7ft high rising in the middle where the main plaque is located), the other three sides formed by chain links between short stone bollards with the pathway leading right through the middle. The main dedication panel features a cross carved in half relief with the dedication carried either side of the cross piece in two panels: "To the Glory of God / and in memory of / the employees and / residents of Thornley / who made the supreme / sacrifice in the wars". A quotation is found at the foot of the carved cross whilst the names of those who fell are located in two sunken panels with their own raised stone borders either side of the cross shaft. Names are listed in two columns, the First World War names carried on the left panel and the top of the right panel, WW2 names on the lower half of the right panel, and two names related to later conflicts on the lower border of each panel. Wall originally erected in 1959. (1-2)
In 2005 the memorial was restored, two plaques were added to the wall either side of the main plaque with additional names for WW1 (left) and WW2 (right). A separate memorial obelisk was also added in front of the wall and dedicated to John Youll V.C. (1-2)
