War Memorial Cross, Holy Trinity Churchyard, South Hetton (South Hetton)
Plain stone war memorial cross on a two-tiered base set inside a small kerbed area with gravel on a slightly sloping site within the grounds of the church just outside the north east facing roadside gable of Holy Trinity Church. Top tier of pedestal carries the inscription "1914-1918 / 1939-1945 / Field of / Remembrance / to our Glorious Dead. / Lest We Forget". Front face of the lower tier reads "Erected by South Hetton Parish Council".
This memorial replaced the original (NEWMP S127.01) which was very similar in form and was erected up against the church wall (1). The old memorial is visible on Streetview images of 2009 (2), this new one having not yet been erected. The original memorial was slightly different in that it had a three-tiered base and was erected by the South Hetton British Legion. All of the other inscriptions were exactly the same. (3)
