Heworth stone cross on a tall slender column with square pedestal surmounting two steps. The whole is set within a paved area opposite the North Eastern Rail Institute on Redworth Road with a low stone wall kerb and iron railings. The paved area beyond the walls has two benches, shrub borders and four lantern lamp posts, one at each corner. Front face of the pedestal carries a dedication to 124 men of New Shildon who laid down their lives in the First World War. The remaining three faces of the pedestal carry the names of these men in three columns.

The memorial was once located in the cemetery of All Saints Church, New Shildon - originally unveiled in 1920, but it was moved to this location and rededicated in 2002. On the original site in the churchyard there is now a headstone shaped stone detailing the relocation of the memorial. (1-2)
