Two Methodist chapels first appear on the second edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1894-99 (1) at either end of Front Street (Primitive Methodist Church built in 1862 at the western end: NZ 31547 42321; Wesleyan Methodist Church built in 1861 at the eastern end NZ 32217 42219) (2). The chapels remain labelled on maps right up until the seventh epoch OS maps (3) where they are no longer labelled and a new church building supersedes them on this site in 1964 (2). The Parkinson Memorial Methodist Church contains a number of features dedicated as war memorials and evidence suggests that the memorials are likely to originally have been located in these earlier chapels, particularly the Wesleyan chapel (4-5).
