Heworth sandstone cenotaph of Renaissance design within the Memorial Park. The upper portion of the memorial is a tapering column of stone with a wreath carved in half relief on the front and rear faces. This rests on a rectangular, sarcophagus shaped, pedestal on three shallow steps. The front face of the memorial carries two plaques: a marble (originally copper) plaque on the upper section with a dedication to those of Pelton Fell and District who laid down their lives in WW2, names in two columns; a bronze one on the lower pedestal dedicated to the First World War with names in four columns for surnames in the first half of the alphabet. On the rear face there is another WW1 marble (originally copper) plaque on the lower pedestal with the surnames from the second half of the alphabet. The memorial was unveiled in 1922 with additions for WW2 after 1945. In 2007 the memorial was rededicated after restoration and the replacement, in marble, of the front WW2 and rear WW1 copper plaques which had been stolen. (1-2)
