This is a stone cross of Celtic type with encircled head, shaft elaborately carved. Resting on a two-tiered plinth and single step base, set back from the roadside inside an enclosure of low stone walls with flower beds to the front and two entrances through gaps in the walls to the front and side. The dedication for the First World War is carried on the front face of the upper section of the plinth along with names of those of Medomsley who died, carved in two columns. Medomsley names are continued in two columns on the right hand side of the upper plinth whilst the left and rear faces contain names of men of Hamsterley Colliery who died in the conflict. The front face of the lower plinth carries the dates for World War II and the names in three columns. Unveiled in 1921, World War II additions came later (1) (2).
