St. James' Church appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1856-1865 as a Chapel of Ease with associated graveyard and Parsonage (1). Aerial photographs (2) show that the church today still stands on roughly the same footprint as documented on the early mapping data, within a small churchyard with gravestones and trees. There are two protruding porches from the north wall, one from the chancel and one towards the western corner. The roof over the chancel in the eastern end is lower than that of the main body of the church. A stone cross finial adorns the apex where the roofline steps up over the main body. The western gable is surmounted by a short bell tower. The church contains two First World War memorial rolls of honour (3-4).
