Memorial Hall (demolished), Front Street/Kitswell Road, Lanchester (Lanchester)

There is documentary evidence that there was once a Memorial Hall on this site, built in 1922 by Mr. Luke Thornton as a memorial to those of Lanchester who fought and died in the First World War. It is recorded that the building went through many changes of use including a Labour Exchange, the Empress Cinema and even as a warehouse before being demolished in 1985 to make way for the Council housing that occupies this site now.

As a memorial hall there was a brass plaque on an oak pattress inside the vestibule of the building. It was dedicated in 1923 to those who went from Lanchester and gave their lives in the First World War, also in remembrance of those who served. The plaque is now located in local council offices. It has a domed wooden top featuring a carved wreath in half relief with the dates of the war either side, names are on a brass plaque below in three columns.
