Entrance gateway to the cemetery stands opposite the junction of Thorpe Road and Stephenson Road leading to a small chapel, in front of which stands a small brick-built cenotaph on a paved area inside a small grassed island. The structure has a white marble base and cap stone with marble plaques on each of the four sides. Dedication on the front panel: 1914-1918 1939-1945 / Those honoured here / died in the service / of their country / and lie buried / in Horden (St. Mary / Church Cemetery. Names listed on the plaques on the remaining three sides. Unveiled 1924. (1-2)

The cemetery entrance also has a memorial avenue of trees with associated plaque carried on the gate pillar, dedicated in honourable remembrance of the men of Horden who fell in the First World War. Plaque also unveiled in 1924. (1)
