War Memorial Cross, St. Michael's Churchyard, Heighington (Heighington)

Stone cross of Celtic type with ornately carved shaft, set on a pedestal at the top of two steps located to the south of the church and facing outwards across the road. Arms and crosspiece of the cross are embellished with domed bosses. The whole memorial is set into the churchyard wall and raised up by five courses of stone in the wall line to match the height of the church grounds. The dedication: "The Women's Thankoffering 1918" is carried on the front face of the pedestal whilst the names of those who served and died in the First World War are incised in single columns on two stone plaques set into the churchyard wall either side of the cross. Riser of the top step directly underneath the pedestal carries the names and dates relating to commemoration of the Second World War whilst the riser of the lower step is inscribed with "We Will Remember Them". Originally dedicated in 1920, WW2 additions obviously a later addition. (1-2)
