Middlehope Shield Mine (County Durham)
These are the well-preserved remains of a post medieval lead mine. The remains of a level, adit, washing floor and a dressing floor, as well as a wheel pit, reservoir, smithy, crushing [mill] and the remains of a crushing pit. The mine was worked until 1895. The site was connected to a branch of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law. (1)
